Robby Perez Phillip's Journey

In the Cay our hero, Phillip leaves home with his mother because of the World War 2. The mother thinks it is too dangerous on the islands, so she wants to take Phillip back to the states in Virginia. They get on the boat called the SS Hato. The SS Hato gets torpedoed and Phillip gets separated from his mother. Later Phillip is brought aboard a raft by Timothy. During the next few months many things happened which changed Phillip in to a more matured man. The ways he is more matured man is like when Timothy slapped him across the face, which made Phillip wake up and realize that Timothy was helping him survive. Just in case Timothy had died and Phillip was there on the island alone and had to survive on his own. He created a better world for himself by taking over immediately when Timothy dies. By fixing the island up after the storm hit the island, and even diving in the fishing hole for fish. When he did all this stuff he did it blind.
Phillip’s mom wanted to leave because she thinks it is too dangerous to be living Curacao, Willimstad. Because of the war was coming to the islands. Phillip’s parents were fighting over leaving or staying. The dad didn’t want to leave because he wanted to stay and work and the mom decides to leave and take Phillip and go to the sates to Virginia. Then they will come back when the war is over and it is safe to come back and live there again. The Mom and Phillip get on the SS Hato and leave Willemstad. When they leave the SS Hato gets torpedoed.
The Abyss for Phillip is when he gets separated from his mother, and is on a raft with a stranger called Timothy. Timothy has to take care of Phillip because he became blind. Because of the blow to the head. Timothy finds an island then Phillip gets up fast and falls out of the raft and Timothy jumps in and gets Phillip and brings him back to the raft and tells him not to lean over the side. He also said that they were in shark waters. Then when they get on the island Timothy brought the raft up to shore and tied it up to a palm tree.
Then later on the island Timothy teaches Phillip in many ways to survive on island. Timothy was also showing Phillip that you can still be blind and you still can still be able to work and defend yourself. Timothy gets prepared for the storm that is going to hit their island. When the hurricane hits the sand that was getting blown around from the lower part of the island. The sand was hitting Timothy in the back and cutting him up. After the storm Phillip helped timothy then told him to lie down. They both lie there and fall asleep. The next day Phillip is talking to Timothy and he did not answer. In that moment of time Phillip knew that Timothy was dead. During the month that Phillip was on his own He fixed up the island went around the island using the cane timothy made him. All that time spent on the island transformed Phillip from being a prejudice little boy who didn’t want to work to a young man who works and can take care of himself.
Phillip became a more mature and less prejudice against blacks because he spent at least months with Timothy. He used to just not pay attention to them when he went to the market in Willimstad. Now he will actually stop and talk to them and spend hours in the market. This is why he became less prejudice against blacks.
In Conclusion Phillip’s story demonstrates/ shows/ reveals/describes a true Hero’s Journey. Phillip is called to Leave because of the war. During his journey he overcomes being prejudice and fear with the help from Timothy. Phillip proves himself to be an epic hero/ archetypal hero/ warrior hero/true hero.

Kiana Masinas- Phillip's Journey

After being stranded on The Cay for about four months, the story begins when our hero, Phillip, leaves home with his mother because his mother (Grace) wants to leave the island of Willemstad to return to Norfolk, Virginia. Phillip is then separated from his mother when the S.S. Hato is torpedoed. Phillip is brought aboard a raft by a black man named Timothy. During the next few months Phillip and Timothy have been stuck on a raft in the middle of the ocean, stranded on The Cay in the Devil’s Mouth, lived through a hurricane (even though Timothy died shortly), and Phillip became blind.
Many things have happened through the course of Phillip’s journey that has changed and transformed Phillip into a more mature and better person. Phillip has created a better world for himself and he has realized what is important in life and what doesn’t kill you can only make you stronger.
Phillip had no choice but to leave, His mother was in such a panic over the war and it scared her. His mother wanted to leave soon back to Norfolk, VA where she felt safe from the war. But, Phillip’s parents argued back and forth about them leaving. His father wanted them to stay but, Phillip’s mother felt she couldn’t risk it. Phillip had also wanted to stay, he liked Willemstad. Unfortunately, Phillip ended up leaving after all with his mother and aboarded the S.S. Hato.
Now, Phillip has left and aboarded the ship that will take him and his mother back to the U.S. it is now unfortunate but the S.S. Hato had been torpedoed by a submarine. Phillip ahs separated from his mother and had been knocked unconsciously and wakes up to find himself on a raft, in the ocean, with a black man he doesn’t know, in the middle of the ocean. After, a couple of days they’ve arrived on a cay. Phillip has gone blind and is very prejudice towards Timothy, Timothy slaps Phillip, and Phillip realizes and is aware that Timothy has done a lot for him, cared for him, and even helped him with his blindness. Timothy teaches Phillip to be independent, aware of his surroundings, and how to fish.
Then, after the hurricane Phillip and Timothy survived a hurricane but Timothy died shortly after and Phillip buried Timothy him. Phillip learns to care for himself and now knows why Timothy taught Phillip to care for himself so that if anything should happen to him Phillip would be able to for himself until someone could save him. It has been almost a month since Timothy died and Phillip had been rescued.
Phillip’s story is one that demonstrates and describes a true Hero’s Journey . Phillip is called to leave the island of Willemstad with his mother. During his journey he overcame many triles and tribulations with the true help from a great man named Timothy. Phillip truly knows how it feels to be blind and lose a good friend, thus Phillip proves himself to be a true Hero.

The Cay Essay
In the Cay our hero, Phillip Enright, leaves home with his mother Grace because World War Two is going on. She than thinks it’s too dangerous for them to be there. He is then separated from her when The S.S. Hato was torpedo. He is brought aboard a raft by Timothy. During the next few months many things happened which transformed Phillip into a better person. He creates a better world for himself because he knows how it feels to be blind, being stuck on a deserted island for four months, and many more things.
The World War Two is going on and Phillip’s mom Grace is really scared that they’ll die. She also doesn’t like it much at Willemstad and wants to move back to Norfolk, Virginia. Another reason is that she thinks its way too dangerous for them to be living there while World War Two is happening.
Phillip’s parents argue about leaving the island. Phillip’s dad wants to stay because of his job. But Phillip’s mom wants to leave because she’s really scared about the World War Two. She doesn’t want anything bad to happen to Phillip. Next reason is she’s home sick from Norfolk, Virginia.
After deciding if they should stay or leave Phillip and his mom, pack their bags and leave on the S.S. Hato. As they were heading back to Norfolk, Virginia the boat got torpedo. This means that the H.H. Hato got shuddered into pieces. Then all of a sudden Phillip woke up and he was in a raft next to some stranger. He was a fat Negro, with a flat nose, his face was broad, and his head was a mass of wiry gray hair. His name is Timothy.
Phillip then realizes he’s stuck in the middle of an ocean with a complete stranger. He than judges him with what little he knows about him. But little did Phillip know that they were going to be stuck on a raft for a couple of weeks. Within days Phillip was blind. And did scared not know what’s going to happen next. A couple of weeks later they found an island which they named the Cay.
Phillip and Timothy went through so much on the Cay from not knowing where they are at. To wondering how long they’ll be on the desert island. Not knowing what’s going to happen next to them. Timothy would provide food for Phillip. Then Timothy made a hut which was a shelter for both of them. They kept water inside a keg which Timothy also made.
The person that helped Phillip survive was Timothy. He helped him so much for example: When the S.S. Hato got torpedo Timothy was the one who took Phillip into the raft. He taught him how to fish, climb a palm tree, and be independent while he was blind. He created so much for Phillip just to make it easier for him to get around the Cay.
Phillip would treat Timothy different just because he was a “Negro.” Even though Timothy was going so much for Phillip; Phillip refused to do something Timothy asked him to do. Timothy got really anger because he never asked Phillip to do anything since he’s blind. Timothy slaps Phillip across the face. After that it taught Phillip to appreciate Timothy more. He realizes how much Timothy has done for him and no one asked him to, but Timothy made them for Phillip because he cares about Phillip. Timothy feels that he’s responsible for him.
While Timothy is sick Phillip learns how to fish blind, and climb a palm tree. When the hurricane was happening Phillip couldn’t see or do anything to help Timothy because Timothy had Malaria also a very high fever. Before Phillip knew it Timothy dies. IT was kind of hard for Phillip but he had to get over it. Phillip buried Timothy and placing stones at the head of grave to mark it. Eventually you have to eat everyday, so Phillip went diving for langosta. He didn’t really find it hard diving blind. He just kept diving like it was nothing to him. But in one of the dives he felt something sting. He than went back and felt something going down his arm; it was bleeding but not badly.
It’s been four months and Phillip finally hears a noise that sounds like an airplane. The first thing he did was to grab all the pebbles and try to spell out help. He than knows that it’ll take to much time. Next idea was to get some sea grape put oil on it and put the sea grape over the fire. Sooner or later he heard someone. He was relived because he was going too finally out of the deserted island. There were some people on a boat and saw the smoke. They decided to go check out where the smoke was coming from and why.
He got on the boat and the two boys started asking him questions like crazy. Next Phillip sees his parents after what seems like forever ago. His parents and Phillip go to New York to Phillip’s eyes operated. It took many operations but Phillip finally got his vision back. He returned to Willemstad in early April. He was happy to be backing home. Phillip would than talk to people who knew Timothy, and he enjoyed their company.
Phillip’s story demonstrates a true Hero’s Journey. Phillip is called to leave the war. During his journey he overcomes being prejudice with help form Timothy. Phillip proves himself to be a true hero.
