The Cay- Final Essay

In The Cay our hero, Phillip, leaves home with his mother because she wanted to get away from the war. He is then separated from her when the S.S. Hato sunk. He is brought aboard a raft by Timothy. During the next few months many things took place which changed Phillip into a better person. He creates a better world for himself because he looks at the world different
Phillip and his mom left because of World War 2. Phillips parents argued a lot about them leaving. His mom and dad had different thought about them leaving. His dad says it’s a bad idea. Because of the war there going to be fighting in the sea. He also thinks that if she wants to leave that bad, they should catch an airplane. But she refused and said that it would be safer to leave. So they left the island on a boat into the deep blue sea.
Phillip lands on a deserted island in the middle of the Caribbean. He is mentored by Timothy. Phillip goes thru a lot that makes him change. Timothy teaches Phillip a lot to live. He evens leads him to a fishing hole where he could fish. Timothy slapped Phillip. After the slap, Phillip realized that everything that Timothy did was to help him. Later Phillip helps Timothy when he was sick with Malaria. Phillip takes a chance to go and dive for Langosta.
Phillip has been thru a lot of things that many people can’t understand. He was blind. But still did things to help him survive. He acted like a little baby before he went thru everything. Then he matured so much that he became independent. He even didn’t hang with his old friends because they were too immature for him. He even wasn’t prejudice against black people anymore.
Phillip’s story demonstrates a true Hero’s journey. Phillip is called to leave the war. During his journey he overcomes all fear with help from Timothy. Phillip proves himself to be a true hero.
