I thought the Main Ideas was that Della and Jim did the best they could to get each other presents. Also gave up something that matters a lot to them. Even though they didn't have any money. And If they did it was too little. Della saved up all of her money; so she could buy her husbend Jim a present for Christmas. Yet when it came around Christmas time she only had one dollar and eighty cents.
Della felt really bad because she wanted to get her husband Jim a present. So she fluttered out the door and down the stairs to the street. She than read a sign that said " Mme. Sofronie. Hair Good of All Kinds." As soon as she read that she headed inside. Next she saw Madame and asked "If she could bought hair?" Madame said " I buy hair. "Take yer hat off and let's have a sight at the looks of it." Madame liked her hair so she bought it for twenty dollars.
But little did Della know that her husbend sold his watch for her present "the combs." I think Della and Jim both felt bad for selling something that was valuable to them. For example Della said "Jim, daring," she cried, "Dont' look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold it because I couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving you a present." Jim said "I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."
