I believe the theme of the story "Gift of the Magi" is if you love someone you are willing to do anything and sacrifice your pride and joy because you love that person and want to make them happy no matter what.
I also believe that the other part of the theme is not just love but the sacrifice you make for that person. It's not easy like throwing away a piece of paper you have that you can easily throw away. Your giving up something for that person that is close to your heart that actually means something to you and your doing all for the love of that person just to make them happy. But, your also surrendering yourself to that person it's like letting them know that your willing to change your life to be with them.
Therefore, I believe of the story is about a man and a woman who love each other so very much that they're willing to give up something that means something to them to make each other happy because it's Christmas Eve.
